Same-Sex Marriage Demonstration, October 10 in New York City
Event date: October 10, 2007
One thousand one hundred thirty-eight flowers will be handed out at
11:38 a.m. next week in New York's Union Square to symbolize the 1,138
federal rights that come automatically with marriage, an institution
denied same-sex couples. A display of 1,138 roses will be set up in the
square, and each rose will be tied with a card representing one of the
federal marriage rights that gay and lesbian couples are not lawfully
allowed to enjoy. The demonstration will take place October 10 at the
Abraham Lincoln statue in the park, the site of other civil rights
demonstrations. Attending will be Lambda Legal executive director Kevin
Cathcart and Love, Peace, and Hope Bridal Jewelry collection designer
Udi Behr, whose line sells rings for straight couples who support
same-sex marriage. Ten percent of the proceeds will be donated to Lambda
Legal. (The Advocate)
