Short Summary
I'm Kaitlan Spencer. I'm a filmmaker,
writer, and culture enthusiast. I have the incredible opportunity to
serve as the Communications Manager for Open Hand Studios - a non-profit
dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating cultural heritage
through innovative and educational community development projects. Their
current projects are located in Umm el-Jimal, Jordan; Muhigo, Burundi;
and Korr, Kenya. My job will include traveling to these locations to
make short films and videos, take photos, and gather stories of those
whose lives are changed through the work of Open Hand Studios. I will
also be writing the organization web content, newsletters, blogs, grant
proposals, and promotional material.
What We Need & What You Get
I
am asking for $7,000 to cover flights, housing, and food to sustain
nine months of work. During that time, I will be based in Umm el-Jimal,
Jordan, living with a local host family. Two short-term trips to both
Kenya and Burundi will allow ample time to gather stories and materials
to further the work of each project.
The Impact
"Kaitlan has been helping volunteer
at Open Hand Studios for many months, and her hard work and impressive
talent have brought great benefit to our work and to the lives of the
communities we serve. As a passionate storyteller and skilled media
creator, we are excited about her efforts to spend most of the next year
helping our projects move forward. As she travels to each of the
project sites, her hands-on work coupled with her creative skills will
allow us to better share the stories of the people we work with as well
as communicate their needs and the benefits of our programs. As a
dedicated learner, a keen observer, and a passionate seeker of justice
and equality in the global village we - and the families we serve in
Jordan, Burundi, and Kenya - can't wait to have Kaitlan on board."
